Are sore spots normal when I get a new denture?

Although steps are taken to reduce sore spots, they are normal and expected after dentures are given to our patients. However, the majority of patients have no difficulty with sore sopts at all. We recommend that patients wear them for upto four hours the first few days to start getting used to them. Then adding one hour per day upto the desired amount of time they wish to wear them for. It is recommended that patients give their gums about eight hours of rest per day without their dentures, so taking them out at night is a great idea. Many patients wear their dentures at night and although it has been traditionally ill-advised, it is generally the norm. New dentures create sore sopts until the tissue that supports them starts to get harder like callussed skin. Until then new dentures are like getting a new pair of dress shoes, it takes a few weeks of wearing them to break them in. You are free to visit us upto six months after your new dentures have been completed so we can remove the areas on the dentures that are bothersome. Don’t adjust the dentures yourselves, leave it to the professionals. Afterall, you’ve already paid for the adjustments which are included. We believe that a one-time visit to a denturist is not an acceptable method for making dentures. You get what you pay for. Regards. Dr. Zeljko
